Turnaround time reporting

Raw sample records in, a turnaround time report by department and site out, with no one building it by hand.

01

Problem and my role

Turnaround time, how long a sample takes from receipt to result, is one of a laboratory’s core quality measures. The raw data sat in Excel exports from the laboratory information system: one row per sample and the tests run on it, across several departments and sites. I built the system that turns those exports into a turnaround time report for stakeholders.

02

Workflow

  1. Sample and test records are exported from the laboratory information system as Excel sheets.
  2. Python parses and cleans the sheets with pandas.
  3. Turnaround time is calculated for every sample.
  4. Results are aggregated by test department (chemistry, haematology and serology), then by laboratory site.
  5. The report is generated automatically, with charts in seaborn, and exported to PDF for stakeholders.

Stack: Python, pandas, seaborn, PDF export.

03

Result

Stakeholders received a turnaround time report broken down by department and site, generated automatically from the raw exports and used for weekly strategic decisions.
